Jalal walked in a dizzying haze through the tunnel at the south wall. Overwhelmed by the devotion of several hundred kobolds, he swam around in the sea of confusion. The burden of so many counting on him made his knees wobble.

Collapsing onto the floor of the tunnel, Jalal struggled to focus his mind. He was a soldier, not a leader. He had never contemplated any other life than his position guarding the Lord Marshal. He was comfortable with the responsibilities and liked the challenge.

After they crashed on Nubti, he imagined that his position was more certain. On this world, Saahdia would need him more than he had ever needed him before. He never wanted to be a leader. All he ever wanted was a simple life where he could serve the royal family and perfect his skills with the naginata. He had even built himself a periapt recently so he could deepen his study of the martial arts. The very idea of a small talisman he could wear in the palm of his hand that was capable of creating a weapon out of the air exhilarated him. He had even flirted with the idea of becoming a Kensei like Miroku or maybe even joining one of the martial houses. Of course, his future was limited after the crash, but this was terrifying.

Standing up, Jalal headed toward the south gate tower. He had to find Miroku or Izumi. They would know what to do.

He opened the tower and exited into the south square. Aside from the clatter of hooves on the pavement, it was deserted. He watched Chiron come around the corner. His head hung low, his shoulders slumped, and his face was long and pained.

“Wait up,” Jalal skipped over to the depressed centaur, “What’s the matter?”

Chiron forced a smile, but gave up the façade quickly, “I feel like a fifth leg. I understand that we have only just met, but I am left out of everything. If it wasn’t for Izumi taking the time to prepare meals with me, it wouldn’t be any different than when I was alone.”

Jalal felt guilty and then almost laughed, “I have the exact opposite problem. I am sorry I have neglected you, and I’m sure the others are as well.”

“I’m not looking for an apology. I just want to be useful. I have been alone here for over two years. I don’t want to be alone anymore.”

Jalal could feel his pain, even if he couldn’t quite understand it. He had always been a loner. Ever since he was a child, he had done everything in his power to spend time alone.

“I can see you are uninterested in helping,” Chiron sulked, “I’ll leave you be.”

“No!” Jalal said more forcefully than he had intended. “With all of the kobolds and other spirits running around this place, how could you have been so alone?”

“Kobolds, you say, well that would explain a whole lot. I always wondered how the place stayed so clean. They must have been cleaning while I was away.
